Me

It’s me!

Me!

What

can I do

with my hands?

I can draw.

On my right hand, it’s always working,

I draw six fingers.

On my left hand, it doesn’t work so hard,

I draw four fingers.

These hands

are not yours,

and they’re not yours.

They’re mine!

Mine!

It’s me!

Me!

What

can I do

with my feet?

I can run.

“Get up, little boy!”

My feet grow lighter.

I want to run around the world

to where people need help!

These feet

are not yours,

and they’re not yours.

They’re mine!

Mine!

It’s me!

Me!

What

can I do

with my eyes?

I can see.

I can watch speedy horses,

Big sister

Bright and early,

at crack of dawn,

big sister’s work

begins!

She milks,

she herds the animals,

she lights the fire,

she puts milk in the tea,

she boils the water,

she strains the tea,

she hands it round,

she clots the milk,

she shakes it,

she cleans up,

she sews,

she weaves,

she spins,

she plaits,

she quilts,

she hems,

she carries,

she gathers,

she mixes,

she rolls the pastry,

she slices it up,

she fries it,

she ties things up,

she fences things in,

she reads,

she writes

and, late at night,

by candlelight,

big sister’s work

is finished!

Dad

My dad

is taller

than the smallest kids’

dads.

My dad

is taller

than any kid’s

dad.

Dad

puts me up

on his shoulder.

Dad

raises me high

on his shoulder.

From Dad’s shoulders,

the outline of the steppe

is clear,

like it’s in my open palm.

The flower-filled steppe,

the turquoise river.

In the distance, camels and cows.

And then,

a camp.

In the valleys,

herds of sheep.

Beyond that,

a man on a horse.

Far away,

a loaded cart.

The people

look like gold dust.

I ask

Dad,

“Dad,

Dad!

How come

you’ve gotten so tall?”

Dad says

to me,

“I’ve gotten so tall

so that I can show

my kids

these distant, distant shapes.”

bub-bub-bubbling

inside the leather fermenting sack

dissssolved right there,

strong on your lips.

The wild leak

on the northern plain

tastes strongly

of airag.

My dears, it must be

because the horses come from there.

Five colors

“Lambs, lambs, how come

you’re pure white?”

“We were born when the snow had fallen,

so we have to be pure white”

“Little goats, little goats, how come

you’re light blue like offering scarves?”

“We were born in the clear morning,

so we have to be light blue”

“Calves, calves,

how come you’re light red?”

“We were born in the rising sun,

so we have to be light red”

“Foals, foals, how come

you’re velvety black?”

“We were born at dead of night,

so we have to be black”

how come you’re golden yellow?”

“We were born in the yellow Gobi,

so we have to be yellow”

Mom

Here’s my mom,

in her bright scarf,

in her green coat.

I drew a picture,

I painted

my mom,

in her bright scarf,

in her green coat.

Here’s my mom,

bringing a bucket,

full of water from the well.

I drew a picture,

I painted

my mom,

bringing a bucket,

full of water from the well.

My mom

is sweet and kind.

She loves me.

How can I draw

my mom’s

sweetness and kindness,

how much she loves me?

Tell me how!
